Behind its crumpled look and its blue-violet hues, iris is also known for its roots, known as rhizomes. It is these roots that allow perfumers to create exquisite fragrances with powdery and buttery note. In perfumery, there are two types of iris that are used - Pallida and Germanica. The first one, Pallida, is the most precious type of iris, growing in Tuscany. As the Iris planting can’t be authomatized, it still has to be planted by hand, one by one, but in recent years Chanel exported some of the italian bulbs in Grasse, to their private fields. The less luxurious species of Iris, but still very valuable, grows in Marocco. The Iris Germanica. As Iris Germanica is more stronger than Iris Pallida, the cultivation its more easier as this one doesn’t need so much attention while it’s growing than the Pallida. The difference between the two species of Iris are basically the rhizomes, which, in the case of Pallida, has more fragrant compounds. ———————————————— Just some Iris in a nutshell details, I like storytelling. This accord is of course, synthetic. One kilo of iris concrete may cost like €100K, which is pretty expensive, as the process of making it takes more than 4 years.
