Veratraldehyde smells like a sweet, powdery vanilla with hints of peppermint, raspberry, ginger, and bourbon vanilla.
Mosciano, Gerard P&F 18, No. 2, 38, (1993): Sweet, creamy, vanillin, powdery, herbal with a slight phenolic nuance
Luebke, William tgsc, (1989): Sweet woody vanilla
Moellhausen: Very sweet, woody, vanilla and heliotrope notes
Pell Wall Perfumes: Sweet-vanilla, creamy, heliotropine, woody, coumarin
Arctander suggests that “a pure grade of veratraldehyde is an excellent perfume material with more warmth and depth than vanillin, and excellent effect in oriental’ type fragrances, woody-musky bases, etc. it is also an interesting variation of or companion to anisaldehyde.”
